Traffic Improvements
Plans for Merriam Mountains
address a number of long-overdue traffic problems
in the community,—especially
Deer Springs Road and I-15/Deer Springs Road interchange, which
are currently operating at failing levels of service. Proposed improvements, intended to assist in creating smoother and safer traffic flow, are estimated to cost more than $25 million.
Fire Safety
Designed as one of
the most fire-safe communities in San Diego County, Merriam
Mountains exceeds fire safety regulations of the state,
county and Deer Springs Fire Protection District. The fire
protection plan incorporates extensive measures that far exceed
those required by regulations governing fire safety for new
developments. Included are fire-control buffers ranging from
150 to 225 feet or more, sprinkler systems in all homes, fire-resistant
construction materials, fire-safe landscaping, and no wood-burning
fireplaces.
The plan also includes “Reverse
911” emergency notification, and it requires that roads
in and around the community be designed to improve access
for fire equipment and relocation routes. In addition, Merriam Mountains as planned is projected to contribute approximately $2.9 million in mitigation
fees and future residents will pay $1.6 million annually to the Deer Springs Fire Protection
District – funds that can be used for additional equipment
or personnel to bolster fire protection capabilities.
Helping
Education
Based on the current plan, Merriam Mountains is projected to pay school fees of
$11.3 million to San Marcos School District, $10.7 million
to Escondido Union Elementary and High School Districts and $175,000 to Bonsall/Fallbrook. Currently,
cities and counties provide no monies for these schools; instead,
they are funded by state property tax revenues, which will
increase as people move into Merriam Mountains.
