The Merriam Mountains master plan creates a legacy of open space that will
serve as a foundation for North County’s conservation efforts. Only 598 of the
2,327 acres within the community will be developed, leaving 1,729 acres or 74%
of the land undeveloped and permanently preserved as open space. Approximately 1,192 acres of the open space will be maintained in its current natural state. The remaining 537 acres will be common open space that will include natural parks
and fire buffer areas.

Many ridgelines, steep slopes and major rock outcroppings characteristic of the natural terrain and unique to the Merriam Mountains will also be conserved. To preserve the existing view shed, homes will be nestled into the existing landform
to maintain the integrity of the landscape and blend with their surroundings. These efforts will complement the character of the area and provide ample opportunities
for area residents to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife indigenous to
Merriam Mountains.
